OCTOBER RATES UP DUE TO HIGHER GENERATION CHARGE

MANILA, PHILIPPINES, 13 OCTOBER 2025– After a P0.1852 per kWh reduction last month, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced today an upward adjustment of P0.2331 per kWh for October. This brings the overall rate for a typical household to P13.3182 per kWh this month from P13.0851 per kWh.

For residential customers consuming 200 kWh, the adjustment is equivalent to an additional P47 in their total electricity bill.

Higher generation charge drives overall increase

Coming from a P0.2603 per kWh reduction last month, the October generation charge went up by P0.1903 per kWh.

Charges from Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and Power Supply Agreements (PSAs) increased by P0.3622 and P0.3567 per kWh, respectively, primarily due to the depreciation of the local currency against the US Dollar, which affected 99% and 48% of their respective costs. This month’s generation charge also reflected the impact of the interim extension of Meralco’s power purchase agreement with First Gas-Sta. Rita plant as approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

The increase was tempered by lower charges from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) that went down by P2.0688 per kWh owing to a decrease of about 1,000 MW in Luzon’s peak demand.

IPPs, PSAs, and WESM accounted for 21%, 74%, and 5%, respectively, of Meralco’s total energy requirement for the period.

Transmission and other charges

Transmission, taxes, and other charges also registered a total increase of P0.0428 per kWh.

Pass-through charges for generation and transmission are paid by Meralco to the power suppliers and the grid operator, respectively, while taxes, universal charges, and Feed-in Tariff Allowance are all remitted to the government.

Meralco reiterates that its distribution charge, on the other hand, has not moved since the P0.0360 per kWh reduction for a typical residential customer beginning August 2022.

Customers also continue to benefit from the ongoing implementation of the distribution-related true-up adjustment, equivalent to a reduction of P0.2024 per kWh for residential customers.

Electrical safety measures, tips for earthquake preparedness

With the recent earthquakes affecting parts of the country, Meralco assured its customers that it continuously safeguards its distribution facilities from potential hazards to ensure the safety of both of its crews and customers.

Among the safety measures the power distributor implements include replacing wooden poles with taller and more durable concrete or steel ones, relocating facilities away from high-risk areas such as railroad tracks and waterways, and conducting regular tree trimming and wire clearing operations to manage foreign attachments on power lines. The company also implements re-insulation and conductor shielding of power lines, enhancing of lightning protection systems, and installing of smart devices to swiftly identify and isolate service concerns. Meralco also stands ready to de-energize power if the situation warrants it to protect the public.

Likewise, Meralco enjoins customers to continue observing electrical safety measures to be better prepared for disasters and avoid accidents. These include unplugging appliances when not in use, regularly inspecting electrical cords for damage, and knowing the location of the main electrical switch for quick access during emergencies.

After an earthquake, and only if it is safe to do so, customers should turn off the main switch or breaker to prevent fire or electrocution, unplug devices to avoid further damage, and steer clear of any damaged equipment or downed power lines. Electrical hazards should also be reported to Meralco.

Customers can report their concerns through the My Meralco app or through Meralco’s official social media accounts on Facebook (www.facebook.com/meralco) and X formerly Twitter (@meralco). They may also text their concerns to 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211 or contact the Meralco Hotline at 16211.
