Driving Climate Action

Climate change is a deep emergency. Fortunately, there is a clear, sustainable path toward environmental recovery. To reverse the distressful effects of the climate crisis, the reduction of GHG emissions in the atmosphere is imperative.

Scope 1: Direct GHG emissions generated
2.9% increase due to higher energy output from the company's power generation facilities

Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity from the grid
6.4% increase due to company’s higher energy consumption, utilization, and system loss

Scope 3: Indirect emissions from value chain
3.6% increase due to higher energy sales driven by growth in consumption of residential, commercial and industrial customers

Our Emissions Reduction Initiatives

Green Mobility Program

We launched the Green Mobility Program to reduce our Scope 1 emissions. We have deployed 156 electric vehicles (EVs) including cars, vans, pickup trucks, and motorcycles to cater to the transportation needs of our Business Centers and Sector Offices.

Resource Conservation & Efficiency Program

Our Resource Conservation and Efficiency Program aims to lower our Scope 2 emissions, particularly from our own electricity consumption. We aim to power our headquarters in Pasig City with 100% renewable energy (RE) by 2030.

Clean Energy Transition

We have made purposeful strides in our just, orderly, and affordable transition to clean energy. In 2021, we commissioned a 55-MWac solar farm in San Miguel, Bulacan.
In 2023, we added two solar farms in Currimao, Ilocos Norte and Baras, Rizal with 68 MWac and 75 MWac of clean energy capacity, respectively.

Improper waste disposal is a bane to the planet. Yet we can minimize our impact on our natural environment through effective waste management—ultimately preventing the pollution of our rivers and oceans as well as the destruction of ecosystems.

Waste Diversion Rate Improvement

In 2023, we achieved a 95% solid waste diversion rate, up from only 17% in 2019.

Single-Use Plastic (SUP) Ban

Our Group-wide single-use plastic ban was put in place to eliminate plastic waste generation across our facilities. Since its launch, we have collectively avoided over 340,000 kg of SUPs.

Materials Recovery Facility

As part of our Race to Zero Waste Program, Meralco has established Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) to enhance resource recovery and minimize waste sent to landfills. By 2023, the Meralco Operating Center and all Sector Offices have fully operational MRFs, significantly advancing our waste reduction efforts.

Sustainability Reports

We report our sustainability performance annually using key environmental, social, and governance (ESG) metrics aligned with the requirements of the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), sustainability standards organizations (such as Global Reporting Initiative and Sustainability Accounting Standards Board), and ESG rating agencies.
