Sustainability Governance
Institutionalizing and heightening our sustainability commitment and corporate ESG imperative, we established a Sustainability Committee in March 2021 to ensure oversight by our Board of Directors of our sustainability agenda and performance. Our Sustainability Committee is responsible for overseeing our sustainability strategy, policies, and programs. The Committee also accounts for and monitors our economic, environmental, social, and governance (EESG) performance in alignment with the UN SDGs, with the aim of delivering long-term value to all our stakeholders.

True sustainable development can be achieved only through shared vision and collective action. We foster partnerships to promote not only knowledge-sharing but alliance-building towards the achievement of the UN SDGs.
Awards and Recognition
Formerly known as the Philippine Business for the Environment, BSD is a non-profit industry association that provides platforms for Philippine companies to work together in addressing key environmental, social, and economic challenges that impact business.
BSD was our partner in 2019 in developing our maiden sustainability report. It also supported our South Distribution Services group in 2009 in the adoption of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Clean Fleet Strategy Development Toolkit.
Formed in 2017 through a partnership between the Philippine Women's Economic Network (PhilWEN) and the Australian government, PBCWE is comprised of influential businesses in the Philippines that are committed to improving gender equality in the private sector.
We officially joined PBCWE in February 2021, signifying our commitment to become a better employer of women.
The world's largest corporate sustainability effort, UNGC is a voluntary initiative based on CEO commitments to implement universal sustainability principles and to undertake steps to support the 17 United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
Meralco signed the UNGC commitment letter in February 2021, officially marking our entry to the largest sustainability network in the world.
Established by United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and UN Women, the WEPs are a set of principles informed by international labor and human rights standards and grounded in the recognition that businesses have a stake in and a responsibility for gender equality and women's empowerment.
Meralco signed the WEPs on March 9, 2020, as part of International Women's Day, joining thousands of other business leaders who are committed to fostering business practices that empower women in the workplace and across the value chain.

The Enhanced Community Quarantine threatened the livelihood of 6,490 employees of Meralco’s service providers. In response, Meralco launched the "A Day to Give" and "Share a Leave" programs to give Meralco employees an opportunity to donate the equivalent of a single day’s worth of their salary to aid these workers.

In response to the challenge of public transport shutdown amidst the battle against COVID-19, eSakay and One Meralco Foundation worked together to provide free transportation for medical personnel and essential workers through twelve (12) environmentally friendly electric vehicles.

Under the leadership of new management and its directives for sustainability, Meralco inaugurated its two solar microgrid facilities in Isla Verde, Batangas and Cagbalete Island, Quezon. With help from media, these breakthrough projects heralded the way for Meralco’s revitalized foray into renewable energy.
