Micro-Solar System
Under the latest DOE policy, DOE DC 2026-08-0017, the availability of Micro-Solar Systems (MSS) gives customers another option for generating electricity from solar power for their own use. These plug-and-play systems are designed to be connected to the customer's electrical system and operate alongside their Meralco service.
Under the policy, MSS is subject to specific requirements on system capacity, equipment, safety, and customer notification. While an MSS does not require a Building Permit or an ERC Certificate of Compliance, customers are still expected to ensure that their system meets applicable electrical and safety standards.
These FAQs provide guidance on the key considerations for customers who have installed or are planning to install an MSS, including system requirements, notification to Meralco, possible bill savings, treatment of excess electricity, and meter replacement.
1. What is a Micro-Solar System?
A Micro-Solar System (MSS) is a plug-and-play solar PV system designed for your own electricity use. To qualify as an MSS, it must have:
- Up to 1 kW DC total solar PV capacity
- A grid-tied micro-inverter with a maximum output of 800 W
- A factory-set, grid-tied micro-inverter with automatic anti-islanding protection
- A Philippine Electrical Code-compliant plug
2. Do I need to notify Meralco of my MSS?
Yes. As prescribed by the latest DOE policy (2026-08-0017), you need to notify Meralco after installing an MSS because it is connected to your electrical system. If you have an analog meter, Meralco will replace it with a suitable meter for MSS within 12 months from the date of your notification. Since an MSS may occasionally export excess electricity, this will prevent unexpected charges in your bill.
3. How do I notify Meralco of my MSS?
Submit your Notification Form through any of the following channels:
- Online via MS forms here; or
- Download and submit the accomplished Notification Form via:
- any Meralco Business Center; or
- email: customercare@meralco.com.ph with subject line: Own-Use Notification - [Customer Full Name] - [CAN]
Please submit your notification through only one channel. Meralco will process it once the form and required details are complete.
4. Do I need a Building Permit or ERC Certificate of Compliance?
No, an MSS does not require a Building Permit or ERC Certificate of Compliance (COC).
However, it must still comply with the Philippine Electrical Code and all applicable technical, product-quality, and safety standards.
5. Can an MSS earn bill credits?
To earn credits for exported electricity, you must separately apply for Net-Metering and execute a Net-Metering Agreement with Meralco.
6. Do I need to replace my existing meter?
If you have an analog meter, it may be used for up to 12 months after notifying Meralco of your MSS. Within this period, Meralco will replace it with a meter suitable for MSS.
Any meter replacement cost will follow applicable ERC regulations.
